Timeline

  • 1822 - Hughes was born in Uffington on 20th October
  • 1830 - begins school at Twyford, near Winchester
  • 1833 - moves to Rugby School
  • 1841 - goes to Oriel College at Oxford to study law
  • 1845 - takes final examinations at Oxford
  • 1847 - marries Fanny Ford
  • 1848 - called to the Bar
  • 1854 - established the Working Mens College with Charles Kingsley
  • 1855 - begins work on Tom Brown's Schooldays
  • 1857 - Tom Brown's Schooldays published
  • 1859 - The Scouring of the White Horse published
  • 1861 - Tom Brown at Oxford published
  • 1865 - elected to Parliament as MP for Lambeth
  • 1868 - re-elected, this time as MP for Frome, Somerset
  • 1869 - appointed as a Queens Counsel
  • 1882 - appointed as a County Court judge on the Chester circuit
  • 1896 - Hughes dies on 22nd March, aged 73
